The first major event of the AROC National Calendar took place at a new and interesting venue - Buckingham Railway Centre, Quainton near Aylesbury. This was the first opportunity of the year for 'Sud owners to get together and the gorgeous sunny weather brought out the Alfisti in force. I counted 14 Sud variants and tried to chat up as many owners as I could find to publicise the Register and the website. Good to see you all!
Well, what a soggy, muddy National Alfa Day it turned out to be at Weston Park! Nevertheless the Alfisti were out in force despite the grotty weather and there were a dozen or so Suds in the Sud area, most of which were 'regulars' . A notable addition was the first appearance of Mike Covill's'bimotore' creation. This was originally a TiX but now has two 164 3 litre V6 motors fore and aft. Only the front one operational at present! See pictures in Gallery.
Amazingly they managed to complete the Concours and I am pleased to report that the Alfasud Class was won by Mark Mason from Merseyside with his 1982 Nero SC 5 Door. Well done Mark!
The gods smiled on Renishaw Hall and the weather was fine - just a half-hearted shower at lunch time. There were 139 Alfas including no less than 22 of our beloved Suds - must have been the largest gathering in years! All parked in 'pole position' in front of the hall, in honour of their status as 'featured model of the day'. I collected 9 more registrations and took some pics for the galleries. Among the outstanding examples
which took the eye were Peter Robinson's Sprint Veloce which deservedly won the Sud Class by popular vote, Jonathan Trinder's fabulous 1.2 Ti, Dave Armstrong's splendid Ti GC, Martin Winham's increasingly rare 1.3 Sprint, Miles Clynch's striking yellow 1.5 Ti, Jonathan Gibson's similar car in an unusual brown shade (AR834) and Mick Covill's amazing twin V6 creation which started life as a TiX and now resplendant in Alitalia livery. Great cars and great company, what more could a Sud enthusiast wish for! Well done Colin and the AROC Yorkshire Section for a well organised and highly enjoyable event!
Midlands Italian Car Day was gloriously sunny and Calke Abbey proved to be an ideal venue. A record attendance of 202 Italian cars included only a half dozen Suds this year, including George's delectable Super,(clean once more after the rigours of NAD!) and Jonathan Trinder's immaculate 1.2 Ti. The Car of the Day Trophy went to a superb Lambo Diablo VT with a rare black Alfa RZ as runner-up, The favourite Alfa, by popular vote was Richard Rees' lovely Duetto. The usual large gathering of Italian motors with about 70 Ferraris, 50 Maseratis (their concours day), many Fiats (including the cute new 500), sundry Lancias and 150 Alfas but my spies tell me that they cannot recall a single Sud. Surely there must have been!!
