The Alfasud Register

The site dedicated to the Alfa Romeo AlfaSud models

About This Page.

This page is devoted to magazine articles specifically about Alfasuds. Many will be related to cars on the register and some will have had input from owners.  It will also include articles which are in preparation.  As always I am open to suggestions for inclusions on this page - please e mail me direct or use the Forum which has a Magazine/Website category already.

Classic & Sportscar - Feb 1999 - 'Sud Species'

Mark Hughes tracks the Alfasud evolution and, after a foggy driving session at Curborough sprint circuit, compares five different variants - Two Sprints, two Ti's and a Berlina. Three of these cars are on the register - SR004, Bryan Alexander's Sprint 'Trofeo', SR022, George Cole's 1300 Super and SR077, Jonathan Trinder's 1.2 Ti.

This is a thoughtful article by a very knowledgeable writer and the photos in the mist by Tony Baker are good too. Some of these appear in the book 'Alfa Romeo - Always with passion' by David Owen.

Guess which variant Mark liked best!

Practical Classics - July 2005 - 'Super Suds'

Ed Hall tests five Suds round Bruntingthorpe circuit and reports on impressions, with the accent on 'modified' compared with 'standard'.  The cars were Bryan's Sprint Trofeo, George's Super, Peter's 1.7 Sprint (all again!) together with SR005 Colin's modified !.7 Ti GC and SR071 Greg Marking's modified Sprint Cloverleaf.

Considering the changing nature of the brief, editorial vagaries and shambolic preparations, it is surprising that such a coherent article emerged! Originally it was intended to include some Sud racers - but they failed to appear!

There were some great photos taken but few were used.  Great fun though!

AutoItalia - Issue 138 - November 2007 - 'Three of a Kind'

Chris Savill compares three Sprints - Bryan Alexander's 1982 1.5, 95bhp Alfasud Sprint Veloce 'Trofeo' (SR004), David Townsend's 1984 1.5, 105bhp, Alfasud Sprint Green Cloverleaf and Peter Webster's 1989 1.7,115bhp Alfa Romeo Sprint (SR046).  Photographs and testing were performed at Bruntingthorpe circuit.  The original idea was to include an early 1.3, 85bhp version but a car could not be located in time, which was a pity.

AROC Magazine - April 2008 Issue - 'Alfasud Model Identification Guide'

Colin Metcalfe, Register Secretary, writes a comprehensive and detailed description of all the models and the timeline.

It is lavishly illustrated, mostly using contemporary publicity photos and brochure shots.

This is a definitive article covering eight pages and must represent many, many hours of painstaking research.

Well done Colin !

Classics Monthly - May 2008 Issue - 'Lucky Sud'

This five page article describes the background and detail of Dave Armstrong's restoration of his 1983 1.5 Ti Green Cloverleaf (SR018), originally bought on an on-line auction for £400.  Lots of photos chart the work and the words have a nice smattering of humour, which, of course is a primary requirement for anyone attempting this sort of commitment.

Dave's car is a familiar sight at Sud events and the appreciation of this fine example is much enhanced knowing the story behind the restoration.

Great stuff, Dave!

AutoItalia - Nov 2008 Issue 151 - The Survivors

A seven page article, lavishly illustrated by shots of some very familiar Sud 4 doors and Ti's taken at Bruntingthorpe.  The background of the Sud project is explored in detail and supplemented by a very thoughtful and realistic assesment. There was less accent on driving impressions, which was a pity considering the 'talent' available - space limitations I suspect.

Classic Car Weekly - published on 6 Nov 2008 - Alfasud feature

Richard Gunn pens a double spread article on the Alfasud illustrated by pictures taken on Wollaton Park, Nottingham and driving experience along the lanes round Stanton-by-Dale with Bryan Alexander's 1982 Sprint Veloce Trofeo (SR004).

Quote: 'Had Ferrari ever decided to build a small family car, the Alfasud is probably how it would have turned out.'
